Budget 2021: MAF to optimise operations of assets with RM2.3 bln allocation - Affendi

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 6 -- The  RM2.3 billion allocation for the preparedness of the Malaysian Armed Forces’ (MAF) key assets will help ensure they remained at optimum levels of operation, says Chief of Defence Force Gen Tan Sri Affendi Buang.

He said MAF was aware of the importance of balancing its military capabilities based on the financial allocation provided by the government.

“The allocation for the maintenance of MAF's key assets which was increased to RM2.3 billion for the year 2021 from RM2 billion previously is very important to ensure the preparedness of these assets.

"Apart from the allocation, a total of RM16 billion allocated by the government through the Ministry of Defence can help to develop MAF’s capabilities based on current and future challenges and threats," he said in a statement today.

According to him, the government's continued concern for the family members of armed forces personnel was evident, and the allocation of RM500 million to build 1,000 new homes is seen to be able to further boost the morale of MAF personnel.

Affendi said in the midst of the current COVID-19 pandemic, MAF would also ensure that its personnel were ready to help the Ministry of Health contain the spread of the disease.

Meanwhile, he said the Budget also took into account the current security threats, such as the entry of illegal immigrants through the country’s vast bodies of water, and this required the acquisition of more Naval assets.

"Similarly, (the Budget is for) preparedness along long territorial borders, especially in Sabah and Sarawak, which requires strategic planning by the Army, especially in terms of placement and facilities for new control posts," he said.
