MAICCI hopes for higher budget allocation for SME digitalisation

By Zufazlin Baharuddin

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4  -- The Malaysian Associated Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MAICCI) has called for more allocation in the 2020 Budget to help the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) embrace digitalisation in terms of readiness for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR4.0)

Its council member Shamini Manikam said funds are needed to empower them in enhancing their operations in a digital world.

"The SMEs need funds to transform digitally. Other than funds, grants or soft loans would also be helpful for them," she told Bernama.

Budget 2020 will be tabled in Parliament on Oct 11.

Shamini said the government must give adequate training and assistance for the SMEs to grow further.

"They should also give training in terms of business capacity building and strategies that could be implemented to internationalise the business," she added.

On the readiness of local SMEs to embrace IR4.0, Shamini said she saw their willingness and eagerness to digitise their operations and urged them to remain competitive in the future.

Currently, there are 1.2 million SMEs nationwide.
