Budget 2021: Canteen operators hope govt will raise RMT payment rate

GEORGE TOWN, Nov 3 -- The Association of School Canteen Operators (PPKSM) hopes the government will increase the payment rate of the school Supplementary Food Programme (RMT) and provide special assistance to canteen operators and their workers, in the 2021 Budget to be tabled this Friday.

Its secretary, Siti Normah Md Desa said the current rate of RM2.50 per student should be increased in line with the hike in the prices of raw ingredients.

This move would assist the 10,200 school canteen operators in Malaysia, she told Bernama when contacted today.

Siti Normah also urged the government to provide special assistance to the operators and their workers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This special aid would help canteen operators to resume operations when schools reopen and ease the financial burden faced by the more than 70,000 affected canteen workers as they could not apply for the existing wage subsidy, she said.
